Starting Monday, December 28, the Holiday Cup will be a part of the GO Battle League rotation. It’s an excellent opportunity for trainers who don’t have the resources or XL Candy for the Master League cups to put their skills to the test. Here’s a look at the best Pokemon for the Holiday Cup in Pokemon GO. It’s a new meta, so there are some interesting new Pokemon looking strong.

There are a few Pokemon you can build up that will carry over to Great League, so your investment won’t go to waste.

Best Pokemon for Holiday Cup GO Battle League in Pokemon GO

Here are some of the best Pokemon to use for the Holiday Cup in Pokemon GO:

  • Altaria
  • Vigoroth
  • Obstagoon
  • Diggersby
  • Froslass

Altaria is a dominant flying-type Pokemon and a force to be reckoned with in the Holiday Cup. With move sets like Dragon Breath, Sky Attack, and Dragon Pulse, you’ll be tough to take down. However, there are still many counters to Altaria, including Ice, Rock, and Electric-type Pokemon. Be on the lookout for those if you consider running Altaria.

Vigoroth is another excellent investment, considering it’s a fantastic safe swap in Great League. The normal-type Pokemon shines with Counter, Body Slam, and Bulldoze. If you don’t have one of these, you may want to consider trading for one. Vigoroth will handle a lot of the meta, including many of the Pokemon Altara has trouble handling. Consider running something like an Alolan Marowak if you plan to go with Altaria and Vigoroth.

Up next, we have Obstagoon with Counter, Night Slash, and Cross Chop. The dark and normal-type Pokemon is double weak to fighting type, and one thing to note is that it loses matchups to Vigoroth. However, with moves like Night Slash and Cross Chop, this Pokemon can easily take care of most of the meta. You’ll be dominant against Alolan Marowak and most of the Pokemon that can take out Altaria.

Diggersby XL

Next, Diggersby XL is another strong Pokemon, leveled up with XL Candy. Right now is an excellent opportunity to pick one up in the wild. Regular Diggersby is still a good option in the Holiday Cup, even though it won’t be as strong as the XL variant. Diggersby XL’s best move sets are Mud Shot, Fire Punch, and Earthquake. With these moves, you’ll be able to take care of most of the meta and even shut down some of the ice-type Pokemon you’ll be seeing. Watch out for Altaria, who will resist Fire Punch and Earth Quake. Running Hyper Beam instead for that reason might be interesting, though it will limit some of your victories.

Finally, Froslass is another good safe swap option with Powder Snow (or Hex), Avalanche, and Shadow Ball. Froslass can take care of Vigoroth, Altaria, Diggersby XL, and Abomasnow. Look out for the Alolan Marowak, though, who could prove to be an issue.

Some other solid picks we didn’t mention for this cup are:

  • Alolan Graveler with Volt Switch, Stone Edge, and Rock Blast
  • Alolan Marowak with Fire Spin, Shadow Bone, and Bone Club
  • Skarmory with Air Slash, Brave Bird, and Sky Attack

Overall, these are probably the top five picks for best Pokemon for the Holiday Cup in Pokemon GO. There are always many additional options, and it comes down to what you have available and how many resources you have. Altaria is reasonably accessible and one to consider running for sure.
